Frequently Asked Questions
- Why won't my e-mail work?
- Many people using LakeAnne.NET have noticed that they can receive mail (i.e. access their inbox), but cannot send mail using their normal settings. Many mail systems are configured using outdated protocols to allow remote users to send mail. These outdated and insecure protocols represent an unacceptable liability for the sponsors of the LakeAnne.NET system. The good news is that many mail systems are switching to modern, secure remote access protocols.
Tip: contact the administrator of your e-mail system, and ask them to support SMTPS+AUTH, on port 465 or 587. They will know what you mean.
- Why are you providing free Internet access?
- The restaurants and business benefit from the increased traffic to the plaza.
RestonTech benefits from the publicity, as well as the ability to demonstrate our experience creating
and maintaining an efficient and secure wireless infrastructure.
- Where will this work?
- Currently, there are four access points that cover most of the "J" area of Lake Anne Plaza, as well as the area around the coffee shop. Please feel free to try to connect from anywhere!
- Will this work with my laptop?
- Probably. If your laptop supports wireless access (802.11b or "WiFi"), it ought to work with your default configuration. Most new laptops have this capability built in. If not, 802.11b cards
can be purchased at most computer stores for under $50.
- How fast is it?
- Pretty darn fast! You will find it is typically faster than cable modems or DSL lines,
depending on how many users there are. Upload speeds will almost always be faster than
cable or DSL.
- Is my surfing safe?
- We want all visitors to feel comfortable with their use of the LakeAnne.NET service.
Please be aware that the technology used for wireless access, 802.11b, is implemented in
unencrypted mode. It is theoretically possible for other users of the system to intercept
any unencrypted data.
- However, almost all e-commerce sites use encryption for web access.
For such sites (the URL will begin with
https:// to indicate a secure site, note the "s"), your entire visit to that site is encrypted,
and safe from eavesdroppers. So feel free to shop and surf!
- My favorite hacking tricks don't work; what gives?
- The LakeAnne.NET service has been optimized for web access, and the most common types
of secure transactions. There have been measures taken to ensure the integrity of the system,
and to protect the sponsors from liability from malicious activity. Sorry.
- What are the details?
- There are several 802.11b access points, spread throughout Lake Anne Plaza. They are named (SSID)
"RestonTech 01" through "RestonTech 05". If your computer provides you
with a choice, select the one with the strongest signal.
- If you need more technical details, please see our
Technical Details page.
- This is great! What if I want wireless access in my community or for my business?
- An excellent idea! While the technology for wireless connectivity has slowly
been maturing, making it all work smoothly and securely still involves solving many technical and
logistical problems. We would suggest contracting an expert.
